Symon stopped by the front desk to retrieve his gun, wallet, and phone. He met with Mayher in the little waiting area near the front desk, and as she rose and pulled on her coat she asked, “How’d it go?”

Symon shook his head and led her out of the building, into the parking garage across the street. He waited until they were both in the rental car, with him taking the wheel, before he spoke. “She’s definitely going to escape,” he said.

“And… we’re not going to try to stop her?” Mayher asked.

“Oh, we’re definitely going to try to stop her,” he said. “But there’s a complication.”

He laid out everything he’d learned from his conversation with Kayne, and the two of them talked through the information they’d gotten from the translations of Kayne’s strange body signals from the various security videos. Kayne had managed to outline quite a bit of the situation, including letting them know exactly where she’d be and when, so that they could arrange for her arrest.

“I still can’t figure it,” Mayher said. “She wanted to get caught?”

“To protect Stevie,” Symon replied. “And I think she needs our help. She needed to be arrested so she could have more direct communication with us.”

Mayher shook her head. “I’m not following.”

Symon glanced at her and then back at the street. “I think she needed to get that tracking bracelet off without alerting Harltan to what she was doing. She couldn’t just remove it, that would tip him off. So she set up the arrest, knowing that the police would remove the bracelet in a way that Harltan wouldn’t find suspicious.”

Mayher thought about this for a moment. “So she’s using us,” she said, shaking her head. “Again.”

“To save someone’s life,” Symon nodded.

She gave him a sidelong look. “Isn’t it always about saving someone’s life or keeping them out of prison or getting their robot arm back or whatever?”

Symon’s expression was wry. “Isn’t all of that actually part of our job?”

Mayher puffed her cheeks and blew out a breath. “And you’re ok with her using us like this? With her planning to escape?”

“I’ll keep her locked up if I can,” he replied. “I’m not going to just let her escape. I’ve done all I can do to prevent it at the moment, though. For now we have to leave her to the Boston PD while we look for Stevie.”

Mayher considered this, and nodded as if resigned to it. Then, after a pause, she asked, “What about Lee Coben?”

Symon had thought a lot about Lee Coben. And more specifically, about the role he and Mayher were playing in the manhunt. If it could even be called a manhunt.

So far their hands had been tied, with the two of them forced to assist in fruitless operations and searches. Symon had assessed that case from every angle, and thought he might just be able to hunt Coben down if he were given the nod to go for it. But instead, for whatever reason,
